Pharrell Williams Named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador: A Vision for Unity and Education

Pharrell Williams Named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador

Pharrell Williams, the multi-talented producer, Louis Vuitton menswear creative director, and now UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, delivered an inspiring speech at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris. Addressing an audience of 800 students, Pharrell shared his vision for a more united and equitable world, focusing on the transformative power of education and collaboration.

Betting on the Youth

Reflecting on his new role, Pharrell expressed deep humility: “I never dreamed in 51 years that I would be standing at a podium like this, in a building like this.”

He addressed the urgent challenges facing humanity, emphasizing the need for unity:
“We are at a crisis as a species,” he stated. “I’m betting on the youth…on all the people who’ve been marginalized for so long, generationally, to stand up, band together, and realize that we’re so much stronger when we pull together.”

Encouraging the audience to dream boldly, Pharrell added, “When you dare to dream, I promise you can do it. Just do it piece by piece.”

A Mission Beyond Diplomacy

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay praised the significance of this appointment, noting, “A goodwill ambassador for UNESCO goes beyond diplomacy.” Pharrell’s nomination marks him as the first American citizen to hold the role since the U.S. rejoined UNESCO in 2023.

Pharrell aligned his personal values with UNESCO’s mission:
“So much of the blessings in my life I credit to hard work, community, and collaboration, all the pillars I think about when I reflect on UNESCO’s mission and vision.”
He highlighted the importance of combating division, sharing, “Many voices and devices prey on negativity and exacerbating our differences. But…spending time in so many different places, cultures, cities, countries, I’ve seen firsthand how much we’re all connected and intertwined.”

Closing the Opportunity Gap

Pharrell concluded by outlining his primary goal as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador: “My goal is to promote the kind of education that helps even the odds for marginalized kids like myself…by closing the opportunity path. Opportunity should not be determined by the circumstances of where you come from.”

Through his new role, Pharrell Williams continues to use his platform to inspire, unite, and uplift, proving that creativity and compassion can drive meaningful change.
