Andrew Garfield Reflects on Grief and Love in Heartfelt Video with Elmo
In a touching collaboration with Sesame Workshop, Andrew Garfield opened up about the loss of his mother, Lynn, who passed away in 2019 from pancreatic cancer. Speaking candidly in a video with Elmo, Garfield shared his thoughts on grief, love, and the enduring bond he feels with his mother.
When Elmo asked how Garfield was doing, the actor responded, “I’m just thinking about my mom today. She passed away not too long ago, and you know, I just miss her a lot.” Garfield emphasized that feeling sadness over losing someone is “actually kind of okay.” He continued, “You know, that sadness is kind of a gift… because it means that you really loved somebody when you miss them.”
Garfield spoke about how memories of his mother bring him comfort: “When I miss my mom, I remember all the cuddles I used to get from her. All the hugs I used to get from her. It makes me feel close to her when I miss her, in a strange sort of way.”
The actor concluded by celebrating his mother’s memory, saying, “I’m happy to have all the memories of my mom and all the joy she brought me. So, when I miss her, I remember it’s because she made me so happy. So, I can celebrate her and I can miss her at the same time.”
Garfield’s words offer a heartfelt reminder of how grief and love are intertwined, and how remembering loved ones can be a form of celebration.
Garfield’s latest film, "We Live in Time," debuted in the U.S. on October 11. Starring alongside Florence Pugh, the film chronicles a couple’s relationship over a decade.
