Refik Anadol Announces World's First AI-Driven Art Museum, DATALAND, Opening in 2025
AI art pioneer Refik Anadol has revealed plans for the groundbreaking launch of DATALAND, the world’s first museum dedicated to artificial intelligence and data visualization. Slated to open in 2025, DATALAND will be housed in the Frank Gehry-designed Grand LA complex, joining renowned cultural landmarks like the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the Broad, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
“DATALAND welcomes people of all backgrounds with unparalleled experiences utilizing machine learning and cutting-edge sensory and visualization technologies,” the Refik Anadol Studio shared. The museum aims to combine physical exhibits with online learning platforms and will serve as a public repository for nature-focused data sets, while building a comprehensive AI art collection.
The museum’s first exhibitions will center on the Large Nature Model, an AI model based on nature data, designed to raise environmental awareness. Originally presented at the World Economic Forum, this initiative blends innovation and advocacy.
DATALAND is set to elevate the immersive experience even further, incorporating AI-generated scents in its galleries. Anadol collaborated with a scent company to create an AI model trained on over 500,000 scents. “When you enter this room, it is dreaming all the flowers in the world,” Anadol explained, offering a sensory experience to complement the visual art.
Since founding his studio with Efsun Erkiliç in 2014, Anadol has become a leader in AI-generative art, with projects showcased at major venues like the United Nations and the Sphere in Las Vegas. His 2022 piece Unsupervised was recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, marking a milestone for AI art in institutional collections.
